There has to be a surface interpretation that -- far from being juvenile -- is the one that the author wants us to get to with some thinking. But, usually genius attempts to put a second interpretation underneath that the surface interpretation is a distraction to finding.

I tended to have the interpretation you gave until I heard an interview with Brian May. May said that he will never reveal the true meaning of this song becaues he doesn't like it when people reveal the true meanings of his songs.

Now, if other people think the song has a secret meaning, it might not mean much. But May said Freddie told him the actual meaning, so I thought that proved there had to be something there, so I went back and looking for it.

In the end, I'm just trying to copy Herb Morris, who I TAed Philosophy of Literature for. We read a story by Borges, "Emma Zunz," which even Borges said was an ugly little piece with no deeper meaning. But Prof. Morris found the truth lying under that story that was such a clear sign of genius that I was deeply touched by his interpretation. So, now I enjoy looking at pieces that might be pieces of genius and seeing if there are clues like he found in "Emma Zunz"

Ok so I relistened to the song a few times and I c...

Ok so I relistened to the song a few times and I can understand the point about the rebirth: of course, it's dangerous to try to "interpret" a song after reading an interpretation because obviously one will see it in a new light (and as correlated to the interpretation.)

So I guess when I listen to the song with your interpretation in mind, I can agree with it. Prior to that, when I heard the song, my childlike interpretation was as follows:

A guy killed someone. He knows that friends of the person he killed will want to kill him, but he also knows he has to face the music. So he goes off to face them, then we have the struggle between him and the friends, then he is ultimately victorious, and doesn't die, and somehow establishes himself. And now he finds himself fearless. So the nothing really matters at the end is a contrast of things not mattering because he has overcome them vs nothing mattering because his death is inevitable.

When I read that now it just seems juvenile but, whatever it's honestly what I thought (without having ever really thought about it?)

AND YES. NAGEL IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. I've been working on this paper on him for like six months but I think it's almost done. It's an odd song if taken literally because the first half is about how his life has taken a turn for the horrible, but the second half is about how killing this man has made him into a (new?) stronger man. But nothing in the song can explain this rebirth, but I think Freddie's life does explain it. I think it is what he must have felt like and gone through and why he struggled with his mother throughout his life and his music.

(By the way, you love Nagel? In a way, this is a positive of racial identity. Insofar as a group is jointly oppressed, it is important, and sometimes essential to the group's survival, that the group bans together, perhaps in spite of not having a rational (in this case, biological) basis for their solidarity.

But, I wonder whether solidarity has its costs. Along with siding with your group too often comes siding against groups. Perhaps if groups were formed along "Oppressor"/"Oppressed" lines, it would be easier not to pick up an identity that places one oppressed minority group in opposition to another. But, identities do not seem to form easily along such concepts, and instead, it is much easier to form them along racial, gender, nationality, religious or sexual orientation concepts.

One question I hope to discuss is why exactly is that? Is it because identifying as "Oppressed" feels ad hoc, but identifying as Mexican or African-American doesn't?

Why would African Americans be against rights for ...

Why would African Americans be against rights for illegal immigrants?

I confess to bafflement on this score.

It's easy to see (unfortunately) why I didn't see too many of my fellow blond non-spanish-speakers out to the afternoon march this past Monday, but I would have expected stronger representation from the African American community.

What's the deal?

Thank you, James, for asking that. I was hoping so...

Thank you, James, for asking that. I was hoping someone would, and here, you come along and ask the question that allows me to give the example I was thinking of.

I was listening to the radio last week, to a discussion about the undocumented immigrant protests. They were interviewing a scholar of some sort, who was speaking about her views on the issue, as a black lesbian.

Her view, put simply, was that she was against illegal aliens. Now, that was not the subject of the article that she had written recently on the topic. Instead, the subject was, why do people assume she should be for illegal aliens just because she is a member of the gay/bi/transgender/lesbian community?

She was very worried that people were assuming she held a certain position because of her membership in a certain grouping, but she wanted to point out that she did not hold that position, and her being a lesbian did not entail that she must.

Then, she added (and I am not making this up), that, instead, she is against it because she is also an African-American and they, as a group, tend to be against illegal immigration.

In other words, this scholar wrote an article saying that you should not assume she has a particular position because she is a part of a particular group.

But she did not mean to say that such assumptions are generally wrong.

Instead, she wanted to point out, that she belonged to numerous groups, and so she could choose which one of them she would get her positions from.

Homosexuals tend to be for undocumented immigrantion; African-Americans are against illegal aliens -- this woman is a member of both groups, she saw herself as having a choice on the matter.

I love this example because it is so extreme, and comes from a person who seems rather intelligent and scholarly. I assume it cannot be right on the issue of what our free will amounts to (choices among the various positions of the groups to which we belong).

Nor do I thnk she is entirely wrong though. Without reasoning about what we are doing in these cases, we often do, subconsciously and implicitly, what this woman has consciously and explicitly done: side with a part of our identity without realizing that we were doing so, or that we had a choice not to do so (and I believe, a choice not to do so whether we belong in a grouping that takes the contrary position).

Am I wrong about this? Is the scholar closer to what free choice amounts to? Does it matter? Does groupings have nothing to do with free choice? Does it matter?

Is it good for us to form beliefs this way? Well, beliefs are partial determiners of action.
